In July, the MuseScore team introduced a new NoteVision score converter, an AI feature that speeds up uploading and sharing sheet music with Optimal music recognition (OMR) technology. Since then, more than 1,000 new scores a day have been added to the site.

Any composer or arranger can upload a file, convert it into an editable format with MuseScore’s AI, refine the score, and publish it directly on the platform. This change means more sheet music can be digitized and shared, making interactive scores easier to access for all.

Since launch, uploads on MuseScore have grown significantly, proving this feature was long-awaited by musicians. From July to September, uploads increased by an average of around 130% year-on-year, and today musicians convert and share over 1,000 files every day, bringing thousands of new scores to the community each week.

How it works

The tool uses MuseScore’s own Optical Music Recognition (OMR) engine, a technology that reads music from files and turns it into editable sheet music, MSCZ. Musicians can make quick adjustments and perfect their scores in a simple online editor, or share them as they are. Transcription quality reaches around 95%.

1. Upload
Upload a file of your sheet music and fill in basic details, such as the title and composer. This info will be used if the score is published on MuseScore.com.

2. AI-conversion
MuseScore processes the file using its AI engine and creates an editable MSCZ file.

3. Review
Check the converted MSCZ score. If the conversion isn’t accurate, you can report issues or leave comments. Feedback helps train the feature to deliver even better results in the future.

4. Download & Edit
Download the MSCZ file and open it in MuseScore Studio for further refinement and publishing.

Since launch, the feature has been completely free to use. As demand continues to grow and more musicians convert large collections of scores, NoteVision is moving to a model with free and premium access. It will remain free with limits on the number of uploads, while MuseScore Pro Plus subscribers will have unlimited access. The feature is still developing and learns from the files musicians add, steadily improving in accuracy and speed.
