We're seeking a HR Generalist, who will play a pivotal role in shaping employee experience in our Winona office and supporting the wider HR team on initiatives from recruitment to employee engagement. You will be a strategic advisor to our management team on areas such as employee relations, compliance and training to ensure a best practice and consistent approach is maintained. Successful candidates will bring strong experiences of leading benefits administration processes, updating policies and procedures in line with current government regulations and experience coaching managers to achieve their best work.
We’re looking for a proactive, self-starter to bring their innovative ideas and best practice mindset to our team to further build strong management capability and achieve a smooth employee experience at all levels. This is a hybrid mode work position with a partial presence in the office.

Key responsibilities:
- Monitor and ensure that Company policies, procedures, and reporting are in compliance with legal requirements (currently 15 states) and government reporting regulations.
- Maintain positive relationships with employees.
- Advise management in appropriate administration of employee facing policies and procedures.
- Recruit, screen, and select qualified candidates for open positions.
- Conduct new employee orientation providing positive Day 1 impression of the Company.
- Administer benefit programs including health, dental, vision, life, AD&D, and 401k plans.
- Payroll assistance
- Administer leave including STD, LTD, and FMLA.
- Support employee engagement activities such as employee lunches, social events, or employee surveys.
- Administer unemployment claims, including providing wage and employment information, disputing claims, and attending hearings as necessary.
- Support project initiatives including diversity and inclusion, change management, succession planning, wellness initiatives, and others.
- Maintain current working knowledge of employment laws and regulations.
- Serve as back-up to other Human Resource team members in their absence.
- Provide ad-hoc reporting for Senior Management.
- Assist with special projects and/or assignments as determined by the supervisor.
- Work with all levels of Hal Leonard LLC and outside personnel to perform the duties and responsibilities outlined.
Required experience and skills:
-Bachelor’s degree in human resources or related field, coupled with over 4 years of relevant HR experience.
- Knowledge of multi-state employment laws and regulations.
- Experience in modern benefits administration, including health insurance plans and payroll, preferred.
- Working with vendors and external stakeholders for consistent compliance and employee experience.
- Implementing a new HRIS or having expert knowledge of HRIS systems, Dayforce or other, is beneficial.
- Experience working in an administrative environment is essential. Advantageous candidates will be able to develop these experiences into a continuous improvement mindset to use technology and HRIS systems to their potential through automation and digitisation.
- Applies exceptional multitasking abilities in a multi-faceted, generalist role.
- Takes a detail-oriented approach to data and communications.
- Uses organizational skills to take ownership on different projects and also work as part of the wider HR team.
- Brings a self-starter mentality and gets stuck into projects and problem solving tasks.
- Acts as a partner to management through a professional and credible approach, using coaching and strong relationship building. Applies confidentiality to strategic projects and employee data, in accordance with data privacy laws.
- Uses Microsoft Office/Google suite confidently, including Excel/Sheets to analyse and report data through different HR metrics and reporting methods.
- SHRM certification is preferable but not essential.
